VERNON CENTER >> Gerald B. Peterson, age 90, of Vernon Center passed away March 15, 2015 at the Oneida Healthcare Extended Care Facility.
He was born on July 15, 1924 in Oneida, New York, the third son of Wesley "Doc" Peterson and Sarah Stewart Peterson. He attended Oneida High School and Utica College. A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a crew chief servicing fighter planes in the Pacific Theater and China. As a civilian, he worked most of his life as a crane operator and was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Locals 545 and 178.
Gerald was an avid gardener and enjoyed supplying neighbors and family with fresh vegetables from his garden. He also enjoyed deer hunting, pike fishing at Oneida Lake, Nascar racing, and having a few beers with friends at the Sherrill American Legion.
Gerald was always there for anyone who needed his help.
He is survived by his brother Edwin; sons: Martin and wife Nancy, James and wife Valerie, Thomas; two daughters: Christine Samson and husband John, Karen Motyka and husband Matthew; ten grandchildren: Kevin Peterson, Kelly Bensol, Elsie Samson, Robert Samson, Leigh Ann Peterson, Michael Peterson, Adam Peterson, Caitlin Peterson, Matthew Motyka, and Emily Motyka; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Gerald was predeceased by his wife Jean, son David, and brothers Howard and Stuart.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the second floor
nurses and staff of the Oneida Healthcare Extended Care Facility.
An interment and graveside service for Gerald and wife Jean will be held on July 24 at Valley View Cemetery, Middle Road in Oneida.
