Vernon-Betty J. Cheney, age 91, of Peterboro Street passed away unexpectedly early Wednesday morning September 27, 2017 in the comfort of her daughter and son-in-law's home.
She was born on July 30, 1926, in Bliss, New York, a daughter of the late Clifford L. and M. Mae (Elwell) Collins and was a graduate of the Bliss School System and Cortland State Teachers College where she received her master's degree in education.
After high school she moved to Washington DC and worked for the FBI. She eventually returned to Cortland to attend college.
Prior to her retirement Betty was employed with the Oswego School System as a physical education teacher. She later returned to work for the Onondaga BOCES.
She was a member of the NYSUT and the American Legion Auxiliary Post 907 of Candor, New York.
She enjoyed her winters in FL., golfing and playing cards. She was an avid sports fan with Syracuse basketball being her true passion. She was a loving mother and grandmother.
Surviving are her three children and their spouses, Judith and Eric Antonsen of Vernon, Wayne and Marcia Cheney of Vernon and Linda Jalaba of Santa Barbara, CA.; five grandchildren, Christopher(Erin), Jennifer (Chris), Joel (Laura), Laura, Tracy and Jeffrey; five great-grandchildren. Eirelyn, Grace, Eric, Alexandria and Blake two brothers, Terry (Marylouise) Collins of Candor and Jack (Joan) Collins of Port Crane; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be private and at the families convenience. Arrangements are with the Malecki Funeral Home of Vernon. Online condolences may be sent to maleckifuneralhome.com.
