Obituary of John D. Yonkers

John D. Yonkers NEW HARTFORD -- John passed away Saturday evening, April 23, 2016, at home with his family. He was born in Utica on November 4, 1945, son of George and Ann (Hofstra) Yonkers. He attended the Whitesboro Central School District, and graduated from Cornell University and Wesleyan University. John began and ended his career as a teacher, beginning in the Mohawk high school and ending at SUNY Morrisville and MVCC. In between, he was an officer at Utica National Insurance Group for several years. John also worked as a realtor and formed his own appraisal business. He was a proud Eagle Scout, and continued his love of scouting with Troop 52 as an Assistant Scout Leader for many years. John also served on the Land of the Oneidas Boy Scout Council. John helped out coaching his children on their sports teams, and particularly enjoyed helping the New Hartford girls' summer softball team. John married Kathie Deal in 1969. In their retirement, they enjoyed traveling together on "trips of a lifetime" including Alaska and Yellowstone National Park. John is survived by his wife, Kathie; his three children: Marc (Tammy) Yonkers of Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada; Jill (John) Emmons of Lancaster, New York; and Eric Yonkers of Clifton Park, New York; three grandchildren: Aaron Yonkers and Andrew and Jackson Emmons; brother James (Stephanie) Yonkers of East Greenbush, New York; sister Joanne Flynt; sister-in-law, Kareen Williamson of Vernon Center, New York; brother and sister-in-law, David and Patti Deal of New Mexico; brother and sister-in-law, Dan and Melodie Deal of Vernon Center, New York; and several nieces, nephews, and friends. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday April 27, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Malecki Funeral Home, Vernon, New York. A memorial service will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Vernon Center United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at the Skinner Cemetery in Vernon Center.
